Week 2: Literacy Traces

Week 2: Literacy Traces

Hello nice people,

Thank you for jumping into Perusall and Currents for reading insights and introductions. Really enjoyed reading your intros.  A request: could you look at the Introductions on Currents and say something nice to one other human? Since so many of you are future teachers, I see the practice of responding to others’ ideas a big part of what we do as educators. Responding is not always easy, but one of my core beliefs as an educator is that everyone wants to feel seen and heard, and importantly, know that they are a valued member of a community. When we are all responding to other’s ideas, our class will just get better and better because we’ll value all the input and know that our ideas matter too. Say hello to someone. We could all use that right now I would imagine. Thanks in advance. (Remember you can find the link to our Currents Community in the right hand side of our website–> You’ll need to be logged into your Chico State accounts.)

Coming up this week: See longer description on the Make Cycle 1 page above and HERE

  • Sept 2: By Wednesday night (midnight-ish): trace your literacies over two days, which means starting today or tomorrow if you haven’t already, and share those notes. We’ll be using the notes to write a short paper next week.
  • Sept 7: By Monday night: comment on “The Skin We Ink…” in Perusall. This is a longer reading, so plan for 60-90 minutes to read and comment, ask questions, help each other figure things out in this reading. We’ll be reading a range of research in literacy studies both as a model for our own research later in the semester and to write a paper using some of these readings to explain what you’re learning about literacy studies. Hopefully, your notes in Perusall will help you keep track of the ideas.

Video below gives further insights. I think it will help if you carve out less than 10 minutes to watch these weekly updates. I talk about the week’s work and some thoughts about grading/points/deadlines. I just posted grades on Blackboard, which is the only thing I’ll use the LMS for. Let me know if you need anything; happy to help!
