I have been working on creating a syllabus for a 130E course based on fairy tales as material. I’ve always enjoyed tales and stories and thought they played a key role in learning. I picked fairy tales because there are so many and they exist around the world providing some familiarity for even international students that can make them more comfortable with the material and tasks. Aside from having a familiar schema for students fairy tales have a long tradition as well as contemporary versions in a variety of media types. You can also look at tales from historical and social perspectives, as reflections of social and cultural values and how they evolve and change over time.
I was thinking of having 2 or 3 papers and a project. The third or last paper would be based on students’ choice of topics while I would like to do more guiding prompts for the first ones. The project would be in small groups with a choice of following some guiding prompts or creating their own project. I am thinking something along the lines of them creating or rewriting a tale or tales. I have been having some trouble coming up with ideas for paper prompts that are not limited to responding to tales just as literature without becoming too broad.
