Week 1 reminders & follow up

Week 1 reminders & follow up

Hello everyone,

I enjoyed our first meeting and look forward to all things course design together. A couple of people emailed me for some clarification, so here is some follow up and suggestions for our work together:

Weekly Out of Class Work (option A): In between class sessions read articles you are interested in related to the teaching context you imagine in your future. I put a “starter kit” on the Resources page in case people were not sure where to start. So, choosing a few of those to read would be a cool way to get started. For example, you might be interested in “Potential Assignment Sequence: Language Diversity” on that page. And then maybe looking for an article on teaching ESL in the Composition Studies or College Composition & Communication archives. The journals have years of archives to check out. You could spend the entire semester in the Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) Clearinghouse archives or listening to the Pedagogue podcast series. I will keep adding to this page.

OR

Weekly Out of Class Work (option B): A few of you asked about more time to read the articles we’ll be reading in common. You could decide to read our common texts ahead of time (during this weekly work time) and use our “work” time in class to read articles of interest (the option above). You could read in preparation and comment in Perusall before class if you wish and then use our work time for exploring the resources page. Totally up to you how you use your time. I added a weekly reading plan to our website. You can find that here: link. Next week’s reading is by David Russell; again, all common readings are uploaded in our Perusall site.

Memos: You are writing up a memo each week for the next few weeks, an informal update on what you read, what you’re thinking about, what questions you have. You are writing that in our Currents Community. There is a category there that says, “Feb 4 update.” (If anyone gets stuck in posting, you can have it ready to go and I can show how to post in class next week.) We are using these memos to share what we’re thinking about in terms of course design, learning, the teaching of writing. You can’t do it wrong: just let us know where you are in this journey at that moment.

There is a My Calendar page on the website. Major deadlines are there.

Class (Thursday) routines: I’ll open class at 2:00 by sharing some course designs, some ideas to consider, then we’ll work (either reading the common reading or your choice reading/course design time). We’ll come back together around 4:00 each day for conversation and/or feedback.

In a nutshell for next week:
  • Read: either our common reading (David Russell) and comment in Perusall OR choose some things to read/watch/listen to from the Resources page to get started on your “teaching writing inquiry”
  • Write: a memo and share to Currents before we meet: this week might be all about your initial questions and concerns about teaching. A few paragraphs.
  • Familiarize yourself with our class website.
Feel free to reach out with questions.
Kim
