Literacy Interview with Nick

Literacy Interview with Nick

dysentery

For my interview, I chose my friend Nick.  He is 30 years old, grew up in Newport Beach, and graduated from UC Fullerton.  I decided not to go with an older generation, because although they undoubtedly have interesting stories, I wanted to target the demographic that started school in the “analog era” and ended it in the modern digital age.  The education of this generation has been an interesting one, combining the need to write manually for certain assignments along with a handful of other media via computers.

J:  When you were growing up, how much school reading and school writing was done with computers?  What kinds of things did you do?  What values did your teachers place on computer literacy?

N:  In elementary school, our class would take a monthly trip to the computer lab at our school as a treat.  At the time, I don’t think any of the teachers actually thought computers amounted to anything more than something to be entertained by.  We would go there to play Oregon Trail mostly.
