Mary Hamilton – “Expanding the New Literacy Studies”

When Hamilton says on page 18, “The relationship between them is described differently by different disciplines where people are working to understand the social construction of technologies and how cultural systems operate.”, it took me back to when Szwed spoke about community and how literacies specifically pertain to how a community communicates. And I know I’ve said this before but whether you are literate or illiterate should depend on if you are able to communicate in your daily life. However if what they see is described differently by a different discipline they don’t understand than they become illiterate because they can’t communicate.

In my photo I have four kids all reading the same book and I would refer to this as a literacy event. Literacy is not only developed academically but socially as well. In the photo I have chosen you have students reading which makes them more literate, they all know the same story giving them the ability to share and communicate about the book making them more literate, and then finally they are all in the same room actually talking about the story making them yet again more literate. I really enjoy breaking down literacy practices.

  1. Hi! I really liked your photo. I also really enjoyed the connections that you made back to Szwed. I was making similar connections while I was reading Hamilton as well. I feel like your quote actually relates to what you talked about with your photo as well.
