Literacy and Image, An Analysis on Hamilton’s “Expanding the New Literacy Studies”

Literacy and Image, An Analysis on Hamilton’s “Expanding the New Literacy Studies”

There is a great deal of significance in analyzing more than just imagry, but the great deal of concepts we can derive from literature as well. Appreciating the meaning and value of text can be comparable to being as great as interpretting our world as we see it (all be it that the text is true or at least compelling us to learn valuable lessons). “…what seem to be inert texts in the background of an image, can be active in a variety of ways in shaping and signifying the meaning of social practices.” (Hamilton, 32). I believe that what we write, and in turn what’s being read is significantly effected by our social practices.

I believe that knowledge is power and therefore, there is no greater weapon to weild than the pen (or pencil… or keyboard if you will). This imagry is actually a symbol of power for me because I’m writing a story about a girl who discovers that there is magic in incantations. Certain words have certain strengths in power (as they do conceptually for average people who posess no supernatural abilities). Thus, incantations (or meaningful sentences) are enchanting! Anyway, this power is all contained in the form of a scroll. Withing the rod, a wand, and withing the wand a feather quil. ;)

  1. I love when you say “I believe knowledge is power”
I completely agree with that because words and writing have such an impact on one’s thoughts, it’s a great thing to hold. Knowledge will make you or break you so having that “weapon” at the tips of your fingers is such a great luxury that we have nowadays.
