Goodbye Everyone!

Goodbye Everyone!

After going back and re-reading all of my blog posts I have realized how much fun and how much I have truly learned in this class. From my very first post about why I love literacy, to all of the articles that we have read and analyzed, and what I initially thought literacy meant, to my book club group; Just Girls, and finally the hip hop and literacy group, I have now actually realized how much we have done in this class! I think out of all the assignments and projects we did the Just Girls book Group and Hip Hop and Literacy were my favorite. Those were both of my favorites because in the Just Girls book club group I loved learning how literacy takes place in middle school and high school and I never realized all of the different activities that we take place in in high school that can be considered learning different types of literacy, for example the note passing and yearbook writing. The hip hop and literacy project as also one of my favorites because it was pretty awesome seeing how music can help students be better students and help them learn to read and write in more creative ways. At the very end of this semester I am left thinking that a lot of people don’t know how complex and in depth the topic of literacy can be, I know I didn’t before this class, but there are a lot of unique intriguing ways to teach students how to become more literate and I hope some of the future teachers in this class take some of those unique ways to teach and use them in their classroom in the future. Overall this was one of my favorite classes and I’m god we are ending it with the Ignite and Maker Event.

Article Group Overview: Hip Hop & Literacy

Article Group Overview: Hip Hop & Literacy

My article group was hip hop and literacy and honestly I had so much fun working on this project! I already love listening to hip hop music, but after this project I have learned how much effort and creativity goes into one single song. It doesn’t have to be just hip hop songs but any genre of music. One of my favorite activities that we did in class with our group was when we had groups create their own raps and would pass a piece of paper around every minute or so and add on to each others raps. When your doing an activity like this you have to learn to think quick and it really get’s the creative juices flowing and certain parts of your brain are working harder than usual to try and think of these lyrics you are creating. One of my favorite videos (obviously, because we showed it to you guys) was the “Watson and Crick” hip hop video. It had such a catchy beat and really shows how hip hop is a useful resource for learning. From the other workshops that we have watched so far I’ve learned the other resources that can be used for learning; video games, computer games, etc. It’s interesting to see all of the different “new age” things you can incorporate into teaching to make it a little more fun and be able to engage students more.

“What is Music Theory?” This article immediately stood out to me on the site because the article group that I am in is hip hop and literacy and I thought this article could sort of tie in with that. The articles main point was to explain what music theory is and why it is important. Music theory is defined in the article as “a discipline, in which we study multiple theories about multiple musics. Individual pieces of music cluster together into styles, and each style has a diversity of theories around it.” In other words what traits define certain categories of music and what makes up certain kinds of songs (common themes, common rhythms, common instruments/sounds used). Musical theories are ever-changing because music is ever changing and the purpose of the theories is that “They provide a set of norms against which we can interpret the meaning of the ways in which specific composers or songwriters follow or deviate from those norms.” Music theory is important because “understanding the heavily contextual nature of musical styles helps us understand not only why Bach and Brahms are different, but also why some people who care deeply about music don’t give either Bach or Brahms a second thought.” It helps us understand why some people choose to listen to hip hop and why others choose country, both extremely different genres of music.

I found this article very interesting and I definitely think it ties into my group article of hip hop and literacy. Music theory is a very interesting concept and it breaks down music piece by piece so that you can learn why certain genres of music follow or don’t follow certain patterns and you also learn about all of the different types of reading, writing, and overall word analysis that go into creating a song and album.

Only Girls

Only Girls

The book that our group chose was “Just Girls” by Margaret J. Finders. Every member in our group is a girl so this made the book easily relatable to all of us and immediately we all started discussing the negative and positive things that happened to us in junior high that were either similair or exactly alike the stories that were described in the book. The chapter that I could relate to the most was Chapter 2 about yearbooks. I remember being in Junior highschool and how the yearbook was one of the biggest events of the year and how me and all of my friends could not wait to get it. We were like the girls described in the book who would count every picture that we were in and would carefully think out our signature and what we would write in everyone else’s yearbooks and what they would write in ours. It’s crazy looking back to how much the yearbook mattered to me in those days and how the yearbook is the biggest sanctioned literacy event of the year. Reading this book has helped me understand literacy better and it is very interesting reading this book and being able to relate to it so much and now see how literacy played such a huge role in junior high and high-school. What you read and what you write does play a huge role in these grade levels and this book helps you better understand and explore the secretive literate practices that occur in the classroom at that age.
